Al-Alaq

The Clot · Meccan · 19 verses

Iqra bismi rab bikal lazee khalaq

96:1Read in the Name of your Lord who created;

Khalaqal insaana min 'alaq

96:2created man from a clinging mass.

Iqra wa rab bukal akram

96:3Read, and your Lord is the most generous,

Al lazee 'allama bil qalam

96:4who taught by the pen,

'Al lamal insaana ma lam y'alam

96:5taught man what he did not know.

Kallaa innal insaana layatghaa

96:6Indeed man becomes rebellious

Ar-ra aahus taghnaa

96:7when he considers himself without need.

Innna ilaa rabbikar ruj'aa

96:8Indeed to your Lord is the return.

Ara-aital lazee yanhaa

96:9Tell me, he who forbids

'Abdan iza sallaa

96:10a servant when he prays,

Ara-aita in kana 'alal hudaa

96:11tell me, should he be on [true] guidance,

Au amara bit taqwaa

96:12or bid [others] to Godwariness,

Ara-aita in kaz zaba wa ta walla

96:13tell me, should he call him a liar and turn away

Alam y'alam bi-an nal lahaa yaraa

96:14—does he not know that Allah sees [him]?

Kalla la illam yantahi la nasfa'am bin nasiyah

96:15No indeed! If he does not cease, We shall seize him by the forelock,

Nasiyatin kazi batin khaatiyah

96:16a lying, sinful forelock!

Fal yad'u naadiyah

96:17Then let him call out his gang!

Sanad 'uz zabaaniyah

96:18We [too] shall call the keepers of hell.

Kalla; la tuti'hu wasjud waqtarib

96:19No indeed! Do not obey him, but prostrate and draw near [to Allah]!
