Surah 80

Abasa

He frowned · Meccan · 42 verses

'Abasa wa tawallaa.

80:1He frowned and turned away

An jaa-ahul 'a-maa

80:2when the blind man approached him.

Wa maa yudreeka la'allahu yaz zakkaa.

80:3And how do you know, maybe he would purify himself,

Au yaz zak karu fatanfa 'ahuz zikraa.

80:4or take admonition, and the admonition would benefit him!

Amma manis taghnaa

80:5But as for someone who is wealthy,

Fa-anta lahu tasaddaa

80:6you attend to him,

Wa ma 'alaika allaa yaz zakka.

80:7though you are not liable if he does not purify himself.

Wa amma man jaa-aka yas'a

80:8But as for someone who comes hurrying to you,

Wahuwa yakhshaa,

80:9while he fears [Allah],

Fa-anta 'anhu talah haa.

80:10you are neglectful of him.

Kalla innaha tazkirah

80:11No indeed! These [verses of the Quran ] are a reminder

Faman shaa a zakarah

80:12—so let anyone who wishes remember—

Fi suhufim mukar rama,

80:13in honoured scriptures,

Marfoo'atim mutah hara,

80:14exalted and purified,

Bi'aidee safara

80:15in the hands of envoys,

Kiraamim bararah.

80:16noble and pious.

Qutilal-insanu maa akfarah.

80:17Perish man! How ungrateful is he!

Min aiyyi shai-in Khalaq

80:18From what did He create him?

Min nutfah; khalaqahu faqad-darah.

80:19He created him from a drop of [seminal] fluid; then proportioned him.

Thummas sabeela yas-sarah

80:20Then He made the way easy for him;

Thumma amatahu fa-aqbarah

80:21then He made him die and buried him;

Thumma iza shaa-a ansharah

80:22and then, when He wished, resurrected him.

Kalla lamma yaqdi maa amarah.

80:23No indeed! He has not yet carried out what He has commanded him.

Falyanzuril insanu ilaa ta-amih

80:24Let man consider his food:

Anna sabab nalmaa-a sabba.

80:25We pour down plenteous water [from the sky],

Thumma sha qaqnal-arda shaqqa.

80:26then We split the earth making fissures in it

Fa ambatna feeha habba

80:27and make the grain grow in it,

Wa 'inabaw-wa qadba

80:28as well as vines and vegetables,

Wa zaitoonaw wanakh la'

80:29olives and date palms,

Wa hadaa-iqa ghulba

80:30and densely-planted gardens,

Wa faki hataw-wa abba.

80:31fruits and pastures,

Mata'al-lakum wa li-an'amikum.

80:32as a sustenance for you and your livestock.

Faiza jaa-atis saakhah.

80:33So when the deafening Cry comes—

Yauma yafir-rul mar-u min akheeh

80:34the day when a man will evade his brother,

Wa ummihee wa abeeh

80:35his mother and his father,

Wa sahi batihee wa baneeh.

80:36his spouse and his sons—

Likul limri-im-minuhm yaumaa-izin shaa nuy-yughneeh

80:37each of them will have a task to keep him preoccupied on that day.

Wujoo huny-yauma-izim-musfira;

80:38Some faces will be bright on that day,

Dahi katum mustab shirah

80:39laughing and joyous,

Wa wujoohuy yauma-izin 'alaiha ghabar a

80:40and some faces on that day will be covered with dust,

Tarhaquha qatarah.

80:41overcast with gloom.

Ulaa-ika humul-kafa ratul-fajarah.

80:42It is they who are the faithless, the vicious.
