The Cloaked One · Meccan · 56 verses

Yaaa ayyuhal muddassir

74:1O you wrapped up in your mantle!

Qum fa anzir

74:2Rise up and warn!

Wa rabbaka fakabbir

74:3Magnify your Lord,

Wa siyaabaka fatahhir

74:4and purify your clothes,

Warrujza fahjur

74:5and keep away from all impurity!

Wa laa tamnun tastaksir

74:6Do not grant a favour seeking a greater gain,

Wa li Rabbika fasbir

74:7and be patient for the sake of your Lord.

Fa izaa nuqira fin naaqoor

74:8When the Trumpet will be sounded,

Fazaalika yawma 'iziny yawmun 'aseer

74:9that will be a day of hardship,

'Alal kaafireena ghayru yaseer

74:10not at all easy for the faithless.

Zamee wa man khalaqtu waheedaa

74:11Leave Me [to deal] with him whom I created alone,

Wa ja'altu lahoo maalam mamdoodaa

74:12and furnished him with extensive means,

Wa baneena shuhoodaa

74:13[gave him] sons to be at his side,

Wa mahhattu lahoo tamheeda

74:14and facilitated [all matters] for him.

Summa yat ma'u an azeed

74:15Still he is eager that I should give him more.

Kallaaa innahoo kaana li Aayaatinaa 'aneedaa

74:16No indeed! He is an obstinate opponent of Our signs.

Sa urhiquhoo sa'oodaa

74:17Soon I will overwhelm him with hardship.

Innahoo fakkara wa qaddar

74:18Indeed he reflected and decided.

Faqutila kayfa qaddar

74:19Perish he, how he decided!

Summa qutila kaifa qaddar

74:20Again, perish he, how he decided!

Summa nazar

74:21Then he looked;

Summa 'abasa wa basar

74:22then frowned and scowled.

Summaa adbara wastakbar

74:23Then he walked away disdainfully,

Faqaala in haazaaa illaa sihruny yu'sar

74:24saying, ‘It is nothing but traditional sorcery.

In haazaaa illaa qawlul bashar

74:25It is nothing but the speech of a human.’

Sa usleehi saqar

74:26Soon I will cast him into Saqar.

Wa maaa adraaka maa saqar

74:27And what will show you what is Saqar?

Laa tubqee wa laa tazar

74:28It neither spares, nor leaves [anything].

Lawwaahatul lilbashar

74:29It burns the skin.

'Alaihaa tis'ata 'ashar

74:30There are nineteen [keepers] over it.

Wa maaja''alnaaa As haaban naari illaa malaaa 'ikatanw wa maa ja'alnaa 'iddatahum illaa fitnatal lillazeena kafaroo liyastayqinal lazeena ootul kitaaba wa yazdaadal lazeena aamanooo eemaananw wa laa yartaabal lazeena ootul kitaaba walmu'minoona wa liyaqoolal lazeena fee quloo bihim maradunw walkaafiroona maazaaa araadal laahu bihaazaa masalaa; kazaalika yudillul laahu many yashaaa'u wa yahdee many yashaaa'; wa maa ya'lamu junooda rabbika illaa hoo; wa maa hiya illaa zikraa lil bashar

74:31We have assigned only angels as keepers of the Fire, and We have made their number merely a stumbling block for the faithless, and so that those who were given the Book may be reassured, and the faithful may increase in [their] faith, and so that those who were given the Book and the faithful may not be in doubt, and so that the faithless and those in whose hearts is a sickness may say, ‘What did Allah mean by this description?’ Thus does Allah lead astray whomever He wishes and guides whomever He wishes. No one knows the hosts of your Lord except Him, and it is just an admonition for all humans.

Kallaa walqamar

74:32No indeed! By the Moon!

Wallaili adbar

74:33By the night when it recedes!

Wassub hi izaaa asfar

74:34By the dawn when it brightens!

Innahaa la ihdal kubar

74:35Indeed they are one of the greatest [signs of God]

Nazeeral lilbashar

74:36—a warner to all humans,

Liman shaaa'a minkum any yataqaddama aw yata akhkhar

74:37[alike] for those of you who like to advance ahead and those who would remain behind.

Kullu nafsim bim kasabat raheenah

74:38Every soul is hostage to what it has earned,

Illaaa as haabal yameen

74:39except the People of the Right Hand.

Fee jannaatiny yata saaa'aloon

74:40[They will be] in gardens, questioning

'Anil mujrimeen

74:41the guilty:

Maa salakakum fee saqar

74:42‘What drew you into Hell?’

Qaaloo lam naku minal musalleen

74:43They will answer, ‘We were not among those who prayed.

Wa lam naku nut'imul miskeen

74:44Nor did we feed the poor.

Wa kunnaa nakhoodu ma'al khaaa'ideen

74:45We used to indulge in [profane] gossip along with the gossipers,

Wa kunnaa nukazzibu bi yawmid Deen

74:46and we used to deny the Day of Retribution

Hattaaa ataanal yaqeen

74:47until death came to us.’

Famaa tanfa'uhum shafaa'atush shaafi'een

74:48So the intercession of the intercessors will not avail them.

Famaa lahum 'anittazkirati mu'rideen

74:49What is the matter with them that they evade the Reminder

Ka annahum humurum mustanfirah

74:50as if they were terrified asses

Farrat min qaswarah

74:51fleeing from a lion?

Bal yureedu kullum ri'im minhum any yu'taa suhufam munashsharah

74:52But everyone of them desires to be given unrolled scriptures [from Allah]!

Kallaa bal laa yakhaafoonal aakhirah

74:53No! Indeed, they do not fear the Hereafter.

Kallaaa innahoo tazkirah

74:54No! It is indeed a reminder.

Fa man shaaa'a zakarah

74:55So let anyone who wishes be mindful of it.

Wa maa yazkuroona illaaa any yashaaa'al laah; Huwa ahlut taqwaa wa ahlul maghfirah

74:56And they will not be mindful unless Allah wishes. He is worthy of [your] being wary [of Him] and He is worthy to forgive.
