Ash-Shams

بِسْمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحْمَٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ وَٱلشَّمْسِ وَضُحَىٰهَا ﴿1﴾

Wash shamsi wa duhaa haa

91:1By the sun and her forenoon splendour,

وَٱلْقَمَرِ إِذَا تَلَىٰهَا ﴿2﴾

Wal qamari izaa talaa haa

91:2by the moon when he follows her,

وَٱلنَّهَارِ إِذَا جَلَّىٰهَا ﴿3﴾

Wannahaari izaa jallaa haa

91:3by the day when it reveals her,

وَٱلَّيْلِ إِذَا يَغْشَىٰهَا ﴿4﴾

Wallaili izaa yaghshaa haa

91:4by the night when it covers her,

وَٱلسَّمَآءِ وَمَا بَنَىٰهَا ﴿5﴾

Wassamaaa'i wa maa banaahaa

91:5by the sky and Him who built it,

وَٱلْأَرْضِ وَمَا طَحَىٰهَا ﴿6﴾

Wal ardi wa maa tahaahaa

91:6by the earth and Him who spread it,

وَنَفْسٍۢ وَمَا سَوَّىٰهَا ﴿7﴾

Wa nafsinw wa maa sawwaahaa

91:7by the soul and Him who fashioned it,

فَأَلْهَمَهَا فُجُورَهَا وَتَقْوَىٰهَا ﴿8﴾

Fa-alhamahaa fujoorahaa wa taqwaahaa

91:8and inspired it with [discernment between] its virtues and vices:

قَدْ أَفْلَحَ مَن زَكَّىٰهَا ﴿9﴾

Qad aflaha man zakkaahaa

91:9one who purifies it is felicitous,

وَقَدْ خَابَ مَن دَسَّىٰهَا ﴿10﴾

Wa qad khaaba man dassaahaa

91:10and one who betrays it fails.

كَذَّبَتْ ثَمُودُ بِطَغْوَىٰهَآ ﴿11﴾

Kazzabat Samoodu bi taghwaahaaa

91:11The [people of] Thamud denied [Allah’s signs] out of their rebellion,

إِذِ ٱنۢبَعَثَ أَشْقَىٰهَا ﴿12﴾

Izim ba'asa ashqaahaa

91:12when the most wretched of them rose up.

فَقَالَ لَهُمْ رَسُولُ ٱللَّهِ نَاقَةَ ٱللَّهِ وَسُقْيَٰهَا ﴿13﴾

Faqaala lahum Rasoolul laahi naaqatal laahi wa suqiyaahaa

91:13The apostle of Allah had told them, ‘This is Allah’s she-camel, let her drink!’

فَكَذَّبُوهُ فَعَقَرُوهَا فَدَمْدَمَ عَلَيْهِمْ رَبُّهُم بِذَنۢبِهِمْ فَسَوَّىٰهَا ﴿14﴾

Fakazzaboohu fa'aqaroohaa fadamdama 'alaihim Rabbuhum bizambihim fasaw waahaa

91:14But they impugned him and hamstrung her. So their Lord took them unawares by night because of their sin, and levelled it.

وَلَا يَخَافُ عُقْبَٰهَا ﴿15﴾

Wa laa yakhaafu'uqbaahaa

91:15And He does not fear its outcome.
